MANHATTAN HOUSING UPDATE BY BRANDON C. IRWIN, MHK AFFORDABLE HOUSING COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP

On March 7th, 2017, the Manhattan City Commission adopted a Rental Registration Ordinance. The program will require landlords to provide information including rental unit address, number of dwelling units associated with that address, owner's name and contact information, and certification that information is complete and correct. Importantly, this information will be coupled with data at the city indicating the extent to which these properties are code compliant (e.g., how many code violations have been reported on the property and whether or not the property has undergone voluntary inspection). Rental inspections are not required.

EVERYBODY COUNTS: TACKLING POVERTY IN MANHATTAN BY DEBBIE NUSS

Everybody Counts is a grassroots effort that came about as a result of a report to the USD 383 Board of Education in Fall 2013 that 250 children in the school district selfreported being homeless (this year the number is reported to be close to 350). In response to this distressing news school administrators, religious leaders, social service leaders, and community leaders and volunteers came together to identify ways to address the issue.

The Manhattan-Riley County Coalition for Equal Justice are local citizens concerned that racial bias may be influencing the enforcement of drug laws in Riley County. With the help of a Kansas State University researcher, the Coalition has investigated the Riley County Police Department’s official arrests reports, submitted to the U.S. Department of Justice from 2010- 2014. Here is what we have found.
